Understanding Rasa Part 2

Regina Arabia Yoga | SEP 11, 2022

"Ayurveda gives us insights which bring health and harmony to our daily life. It can also bring longevity and spiritual peace. It is a total healing art, by understanding its basic principles, by understanding our own constitution, and by understanding the exact nature and structure of doshic aggravation, it is possible to achieve harmony and balance by following some guidelines," Dr Vasant Lad

Have you heard the idea of FOOD AS MEDICINE? Of course, this concept doesn't replace prescription medication, but introduces the concept of promoting balance with food.

One of the 3 most important pillars to support our health is food, second and third, movement and sleep.

FOOD pillar influences how we maintain health in a short and long run for longevity and well being.

The concept is simple, BALANCE is created by applying opposites.

If our feet are cold, we put on socks, if our skin is dry, we hydrate with oils or cream.

How the 6 tastes create balance?

A person who, for example, is looking to pacify an aggravated Kapha predominant constitution can begin by giving preference to 3 out of 6 tastes, they would be:

Pungent which is spicy, hot flavor found in chilies, radishes, turnips, raw onions, and most spices.

Bitter taste predominates bitter greens (like kale, dandelion greens, collard greens, etc.), and is also found in bitter melon, artichokes, burdock root, eggplant, dark chocolate, and in kapha-pacifying spices like cumin and turmeric.

Legumes like beans, black-eyed peas, chickpeas, kidney beans, lentils, pinto beans, and soybeans are classically Astringent in taste and very kapha-pacifying. Some fruits, like apples, cranberries, pomegranate. As well as the lightness of pop-corn and rice cake make great snack options.

Check the table of examples below of the 6 tastes and their primary actions and sources.
